Textiles were created in Portland by the Division of Women’s and Professional Projects of the W.P.A. led by interior designer Margery Hoffman Smith. Twenty-eight design schemes were created by Smith, including native wildflowers, pioneer, and wildlife imagery. Draperies were made from colorful sail cloth. The Lodge was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression using Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) and Federal Art Project funds, opening to the public in 1938.
