The newel posts were designed by artist Florence Thomas and cast in plaster before being sent to be carved at the W.P.A. woodworking shop run by Ray Neufer in Portland. The posts were created from discarded cedar telephone poles in an effort to be resourceful with materials. The Lodge was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression using Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) and Federal Art Project funds, opening to the public in 1938.
