TitleStairwell and newel post, Timberline LodgeDescriptionA woman looks down at a stairwell and bird newel post at Timberline Lodge. The newel posts were designed by artist Florence Thomas and cast in plaster before being sent to be carved at the W.P.A. woodworking shop run by Ray Neufer in Portland. The posts were created from discarded cedar telephone poles in an effort to be resourceful with materials. The Lodge was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression using Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) and Federal Art Project funds, opening to the public in 1938. It is a National Historic Landmark.CreatorAtkeson Photo Art StudioTypeStillImageFormatimage/jpegDate1935-1943LocationTimberline Lodge, Clackamas County, Oregon, United StatesSubjectTimberline Lodge (Mount Hood, Or.)Rightshttp://rightsstatements.org/vocab/CNE/1.0/CollectionHistoric PhotographsW.P.A PhotographsTimberline Lodge Photographs
