However, Chum Salmon populations have declined in large part due to overharvest and spawning habitat loss and modification over the last century. It is therefore a major priority of ODFW to rebuild historical populations in Oregon tributaries of the LCR. To determine whether Chum Salmon were still present on the Oregon side of the Cascade Stratum, we employed an eDNA study across three recovery populations (Scappoose Creek, Clackamas River, and Sandy River) from 2022–2024 with help from local communities. There were positive detections of adult Chum Salmon in the Clackamas River (November 2023 and 2024) and the Sandy River (November 2024), but none in the Scappoose Creek Recovery Population and no detections of fry outmigration in the spring. These results suggest that individuals from the Washington side of the river occasionally stray into suitable habitat in Oregon, but that there may not be enough strays to re-establish populations in Oregon. Education and outreach efforts were successful for the project, reaching up to 7.1 million people across a wide variety of media. Results of the current study are already useful for planning restoration projects targeting Chum Salmon spawning habitat and will be used to guide future reintroduction activities in the Cascade StratumNoteprepared by Kelcee L.
