A commercial fishery was open in Youngs Bay during the early 1800's. Early catch records are lacking for this era but historical documents refer to several fish traps that were operated in the area with fall catches of chum and coho salmon. The commercial salmon fisheries were closed in 1831. In 1862 commercial salmon fishing was reestablished in the bay to harvest excess hatchery production.
